Tool-Activated Dust Extractor Vacuums

Although it may sound like a small thing, there is a huge benefit to using a tool activated vac. It has probably happened to you - You have the vacuum or dust collector plugged into your sander. You turn it on, begin your sanding, and before you realize it, you're pushing dust all over the workpiece. You forgot to turn on the vacuum system…again. Defeats even having a vacuum system attached to the power tool! How many times has this happened to you?

Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.

To protect against this risk, on April 22, 2008, EPA issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices and other actions aimed at preventing lead poisoning. We will once again be at the JLC Live Show in Providence RI. This year, however, we will not be teaming up with Festool. For a change, we will be sharing a booth with PLS - Pacific Laser Systems! The JLC Live Show is being held at the Providence Convention Center on March 24th and 25th.

PLS Lasers are 80% made, assembled, and calibrated in the USA. Their tool line goes like this:

PLS5 - Their 1st tool. Designed by a framing carpenter. Goes Up/Down/Left/Right/Out. The pendulum target is useful and unique. No offset on this laser. How does it operate? One diode, put into an optic system, split 5 different ways. Gives a crisp point over a good distance. Twice as accurate as any other brand. You can make all your measurements on the floor and transfer up. A point-to-point laser with outside capability.

PLS3 - A dumbed down version of the PLS5...Up/Down/Out. Point-to-point laser.

PLS360 - Continuous, poor-man's rotating laser. 250 ft range. No moving parts, which is nice. Easy setup with ceiling bracket. A unique laser.

PLS90 - A 90-degree squaring tool. Shoots vertical lines. Point up, point down. Ideal for squaring on slab/on slope. Has a 300 ft. working range. Can be used outdoor on a tripod or 2x4. PLS2 - Crossline tool. Indoor only price point tool.

PLS180 - Also a crossline tool, but shoots a longer line and has an exterior mode for siding and shingle work. PLS's best selling tool.

FT90 - Squaring tool "Floor Tool 90". Offers an offset for grout. 65' range. Is very durable with an all-metal housing. Only squaring accuracy. A better choice for Tile guys than the DeWalt DW060K.

HLE1000 - An exterior only rotating laser. Spins fast at one speed only. Has grade capabilities. Comes with a rechargeable battery pack and an alkaline pack.

HVR505R - A rotating laser that self levels, even on its side! You can change speeds on laser, and it also has a scan mode. This laser will do manual grade for simple grade work.

PLS4 - Combo points and lines laser. 180-degrees, with plumb up and plumb down. For guys doing a little bit of everything.

PLS Lasers have no locks. They are not needed. The lasers have rubber shock frames. PLS hangs the optics so they don't need the pendulum locks. Every PLS laser comes with 1 year free calibration. They have a ETN (Exchange To New) program.

Bosch is launching a new table saw on March 1st: The GTS1031. This saw will be compact and completely portable in size. The saw will weigh 45 lbs, which is the same weight as the DeWalt DW745 portable table saw. The saw is the 'little brother' to the Bosch 4100-09, and will retail for $419.

A folding stand will also be available for the GTS1031 (item # GTA500).

Bosch has just launched a new electric oscillating tool. Bosch claims that the tool has similar power to the Fein MultiMaster at a lower cost. The tool is available in 2 kits:

With these tools, Bosch is also positioning itself to take a chunk of sales away from the Rockwell Sonicrafter.

Biscuits versus Floating Tenons

Various new machines for wood joinery, such as the Festool Domino Joiner, have entered the market recently. While the Domino is a fantastic tool with its own stand-out features, we wanted to take some time to point out the benefits and the advantages of the Lamello Biscuit Joiner versus other joining techniques. These advantages include:

Speed: The Lamello biscuit joiner provides the fastest cutting time per joint. To change biscuit size, simply turn a knob. There is no need to change cutters for different size biscuits. Lamello's system includes glue applicators specific to biscuit joining which saves time while providing even and accurate glue spread.

Versatility: The Lamello biscuit joiner provides the ability to cut grooves for EIGHT different joining elements without a Lamello cutter change. It can also be used for wood repair, cabinet hinges, flush trimming of protruding edges, door trimming and cutting of shadow joints. A floating tenon machine can do floating tenons.

Lateral Tolerance: The biscuit joining technique is designed to allow for slight lateral play when joining two workpieces together. Other techniques such as mortise and tenon, dowel and pocket holes have to be cut with 100% accuracy or the joint will not be flush. This increases set up time and causes aggravating reworks.

Proven Results and Reliability: Millions of joints have been made with biscuits over the past 50 years and they aren't failing. Thousands of Lamello biscuit joiners have been used and their reliability is legendary.

Price: Although the Domino and the Lamello Top 20 machine will cost about the same, a more price conscious woodworker can get started with a Lamello Classic C3 and box of biscuits for about 1/2 the price of the Top 20 or a Festool Domino machine.

If you want to make mostly chairs and tables, a mortise and tenon machine is probably best. But if you are doing cabinetry, casework, panel glue-ups, solid wood edging or miter joints, a Lamello biscuit joiner is the most efficient, cost effective option for you.

New Milwaukee Tools Coming in March

Milwaukee Tool will be launching a new addition to the M18 line with a 5-3/8" Metal Cutting Saw on March 15, 2011. It will be available as a kit: Item # 2682-22, or as a bare tool: 2682-20. It will also be available as part of combo kit number 2698-22, which includes the saw and a hammer drill.

A new combo will also be available in the M18 line. The 2695-24 will include a 2602-20 hammerdrill, 2650-20 1/4" impact driver, 2625-20 hackzall, & work light. If you'd prefer an actual Sawzall instead of the Hackzall, you can purchase the 2696-24.

If you are looking for something smaller and more compact, Milwaukee is also coming out with the 2497-22, a M12 2-piece combo kit that includes a 2411-20 hammerdrill & a 2450-20 impact driver.

There is a new Top 20 Biscuit Joiner from Lamello! The TOP 20 S4 Has a powerful 800 watt, 7.25 amp motor instead of the 600 watt motor of the previous Top 20 S3 model. This is the most powerful biscuit joiner motor ever from Lamello. This motor will also have a soft start feature as did the previous model. The brake on this tools is more responsive, stopping the cutter from rotating sooner than the previous model did. Marshall Burns here. This letter is to follow up on a discussion between Tom MacDonald and the members of his web site, where he as master woodworker has recommended the Burns JB1040 as the best 10" saw blade that he has ever used.

I have spent my entire life in the design, sharpening and servicing of circular saw blades, including five years of anvil work at Simonds Saw Co. of Fitchberg, Massachusetts. I was contacted and asked why this saw blade does what it does...well, here is my answer!

The blade plate is made by one of the world's best saw makers to my specifications of ** Rockwell hardness. This specific hardness is proven to be the best, and the blade is then precision ground and hand hammered to the proper tension for average table saw speeds.

I stress HAND TENSIONING because it is far superior to roll tension, which other saw makers use. In roll tensioning, opposing rolls press tension into blade in a circular motion, which creates even forcefields around the center of the saw plate. When a saw blade gets dull, heat builds up in the plate body and begins to follow the line of least resistance in the even force fields, and deflection can begin causing the blade to warp and wobble. Hammered tension, with every blow causing force fields to run into and through one another, will resist heat much better.

Each blade is completed with the Burns SuperSharp Finish, and we believe that we have the best 10" all-purpose blade in the world.

Festool Kapex Miter Saw KS120 - Unbiased Review from a 70-year Vet

Marshall Burns here. A word about my past - over 70 years being involved in the saw blade and woodworking power tool industry. I learned most of my trade from my father, who spent most of his life working in saw mills in Maine taking care of and maintaining the saws used in all cutting operations.

All top quality saw blades are made of the best nickel alloy steel coming out of steel mills, and are sent through a ridged manufacturing process. Take 10" circular saw blades, for example. They are first precision ground then sent to the anvil room, where qualified sawsmiths level them to exact specifications. They are then tensioned to run true at about 3400 rpm, which is the speed that most 10" table saws run at.

Now, a word about the 10" Miter Saws available (and there are a lot of them!). Most of them run at 5000 rpm. This is fine if the user is using a good blade that is tensioned to run at that speed, but this is not what happens. The user invariably puts a cheap blade on the arbor that will not run true at this speed, causing an inaccurate cut. The operator then tends to blame the machine's accuracy.

I worked for five years as a sawsmith at Simonds Saw & Steel Company in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Simonds was one of the largest saw makers in the world, with over 2,000 employees. They claimed it took at least five years to become a master sawsmith.

Back to power tools. My purpose in writing of my past experience is to lend credence to what I am going to write about: The new Kapex Sliding Compound Miter Saw by Festool. The heart of this tool is the motor, which is 1600 watts (13 amp) and is the only one available with variable speed, electronically controlled from 1400 rpm to 3400 rpm. To me these are the best speeds to cut all woods and plastics, and also lower speeds for all non-ferrous metals. The machine comes with a top quality 60-tooth carbide saw blade that is leveled and tensioned by master saw smiths to exacting specs. With all other features listed here, this tool rivals the best table saws for accuracy.

SawStop's New Contractor Saw

This past weekend we had a booth at the JLC Live Show in Providence, RI. We showed off the new SawStop Contractor Table Saw, and the feedback was fantastic! We performed SawStop's famous 'hot-dog demo' numerous times and allowed contractors and woodworkers to finally get a close-up look at the much-anticipated saw.

This is a slimmed-down, but still SAFE, version of SawStop's unique cabinet saw. The SawStop Cabinet Saw has been out for over three years, and the feedback that we've gotten on the saw has been great. Besides the incredible safety features, this is a saw of the highest quality. The version that we showed at the JLC will probably retail for around $1,500. Options such as cast-iron wings and a Biesemeyer-style fence system will probably drive the price up into the $2,000-range. The saw should be available in 6-8 weeks. Wow, is Festool ever bringing it now! Three new tools will be introduced on May 1st, 2008: The MFK700 Modular Router, the OF2200 Router, and a new Multifunction Table, the MFT/3. Festool will follow that up with the introduction of the long-awaited Kapex 10” Sliding Compound Miter Saw on July 1st.
All four power tools adhere to Festool’s motto of ‘Faster/Easier/Smarter’. I would add ‘Cleaner’ to the mix, as all four tools will provide shops with plenty on dust-free action when used with one of Festool’s dust extractors. Festool continues to solidify itself as the most innovative power tool company in the world with these introductions. Here are some highlights of each new tool:

MFK700 Modular Router

Despite the price tag ($510), the MFK700 is a cost-saving multipurpose tool: quickly change the router base, rather than reaching for a different power tool, and you’ll be equipped to handle a wide range of routing applications. You are able to attach and remove all of the components of the MFK without using a tool. The MFK, with its 720 Watt motor, will quickly become the most versatile tool in your shop.

OF2200 Router

While it is usually hard to find a router with decent dust collection, the OF2200 router allows you to work cleaner with a retractable, spring-loaded 36-degree dust shroud. The shroud maximizes dust extraction while providing high visibility of the workpiece. The OF2200 also offers tremendous plunge depth capacity. The OF2200 router features a triple bearing design which dampens spindle and bit deflection. With bearings at the top, middle and bottom, the spindle is less likely to wobble. This is particularly important considering the sheer power (2200 Watts!) and the centrifugal forces exerted with spinning large bits at speeds up to 22,000 RPM. This document, written by Burns Tools' founder J.J. Burns in 1973, was just found when we recently moved our offices. The most interesting part is J.J. talking about hitching up his ox team with his grandfather as they went out lumberjacking in Nova Scotia:

My one great objective from the time I became associated and familiar with the ecology of saws related to their use in the cutting of things which have become too numerous to mention. I embarked into the field of saws, their use and functions. The act of cutting tools is an old one. Down through the ages of time more things have had to be cut. Some brought about by nature, more by the genius and efforts of man.

Way back in 1895 my Grandfather had a 'One-Man, One-Saw' up and down sawmill that ran from a water wheel. This mill was located on a small water brook in Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada. The foot or board sawing capacity of the mill was 1,000 feet per 11 hour day for 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday. Sunday being a church day, Grandfather would close down the gates of the wagon shed so as to store a pool of water for the next 6 days' sawing.

I recall as though it was only yesterday my Grandfather would hitch up the old ox team on a pair of front lumber wheels, then call out to me at 6:00 a.m., "Come Johnny let's get going!"

Off we went, oxen, carts, bag of hay, 6 quarts of corn meal for the oxen, a red bandana hanky with 4 hard-boilded eggs in the shell, a good sized onion, 4 or 5 homemade biscuits, salt and pepper, tea, a kettle, a fork and knife, and matches to build a fire to make dinner. This we did together day after day.

As time went on I grew up to be a young Lumber Jack, went to Maine into the woods as a Swamper, next a Yard Tender, from there to a Tree Lapper or Head Chopper, then a Foreman. As soon as the ice broke up in the rivers and lakes we would drive the logs down the rivers to the sawmill ponds where these logs were sawed into finishing material, such as boards, planks and other dimensions.

I worked from job to job in the sawmills meanwhile acquiring experience in all phases of operations.

My experience gained, by and large, started with my Grandfather in his one-man water wheel mill. Even today at this age of 80 I can survey the footage of standing timber to within 5%, plus or minus.

The NS100A Narrow-Crown Stapler will be replaced by the NS100B, and the NS150A replaced by the NS150B. All will have rear-exhaust and be oil-free to keep contaminents away from your wood. The nailguns will carry a new 3-year warranty, come in a nice new case, and include safety glasses. You can expect these changes around March of 2008.
In February of 2008, they plan to launch new 3/8” drills, ½” drills, and new stud and joist drills.

Lithium Ion cordless tools have gotten a lot of press over the past 2 years. Milwaukee started the craze with its Milwaukee V28 cordless tool line, which were marketed as ‘more powerful but lighter than regular 18V tools’. Bosch jumped into the game with its 36V Lithium Ion, turning historically corded tools into cordless tools. DeWalt did the same with a 36V line. Bosch then came out with 10.8V lithium ion screwdrivers, which were extremely light. Milwaukee and Makita then jumped back in, with 18V lines of lithium ion tools – Milwaukee with its V18 Series, and Makita with a sleek new look.

DeWalt has followed with in improved version of Lithium Ion tools – a phospate based lithium ion battery that DeWalt has trademarked its NANO Technology. NANO Phosphate it a different type of lithium ion, with its biggest advantaged being its weight and number of recharges.

Because DeWalt 18V XRP batteries have been so popular over the years, the new NANO tools can be used with the old XRP batteries. The new NANO chargers will even charge the old XRP NiCd batteries. Old chargers WILL NOT charge the new NANO batteries, so customers need to have a new charger handy.

DeWalt has 3 different lines of NANO cordless tools: 18V, 28V and 36V. The 18V is the same weight as a 12V NiCd, so contractors are going to get 18V power with much less weight. The 28V’s weight is similar to 18V NiCd, and the 36V is for electric-type tools, but without the cord...such as rotary hammers, circular saws, etc.
DeWalt is keeping its NiCd line, as they feel it still has its place among professionals.

Lamello Top 20 Biscuit Joiner

When biscuit joining is mentioned in the woodworking industry, the name Lamello is the first to come to mind. This is because Lamello invented the joining process in Switzerland in 1955. To this day, Lamello still manufactures the highest quality biscuit joiners available.

Biscuit joining is the process of lining up and joining two workpieces. One of the most important, and challenging, jobs during the building of a piece of furniture is the lining-up, gluing, and clamping of two workpieces. The biscuit joiner makes this job simple.

A biscuit joiner is used to cut a circular slot into each workpiece that will be joined. Lamello biscuit joiners use a 6-tooth carbide-tipped blade that, when plunged into the workpiece, precisely cuts this circular slot out. This slot is created by the woodworker on both workpieces. The location of the slots are determined by where the woodworker wants the workpieces joined. After the slots are cut, wood glue is appied into the slots. The woodworker then takes a biscuit, which is a small football-shaped joining piece, and joins the two workpieces with it. Because the glue must dry before moving to the next step of the process, clamps are used to hold the pieces in place until the glue is dry. How long this takes depends on the type of wood glue that is being used. There are quick-set wood glues that can be used. The biscuits come in different sizes (#0 biscuits, #10 biscuits, #20 biscuits) so the user has options based on the size of the workpiece and the strength of hold that is needed.

You can find other biscuit joiners on the market besides Lamello, including Porter-Cable, DeWalt, and Freud. If price is a big issue, or if this is just for one project and you won’t be using the tool often, then one of the cheaper models may be for you. But if you prefer the best tool on the market, then the Lamello Top 20 is the way to go. Because many professionals and hobbyists often do not want to invest $700+ in a biscuit joiner, Lamello also sells a lower-level joiner: the Lamello C3 Classic Spliner. This biscuit joiner sells for around $450, and is still a superior product to the Porter-Cable, DeWalt, and Freud products.

Festool's C12 Cordless Drill Kit

Festool’s C12 12V Cordless Drill is the most imaginitive cordless tool you’ll find anywhere. With 5 different chucks, all of which lock into the drill with the turn of a wrist, this drill is a 5 cordless tools in one! There are chucks that turn it from a regular straight cordless drill, to a right angle cordless drill, to an offset cordless drill, to a drywall cordless screwgun, to a quick-change bit system!

The C12 is a lightweight, compact cordless drill with superb ergonomics. It is the first cordless drill with a brushless motor. This means no wearing parts! Which leads to extreme durability and long life.

The chuck that I find myself reaching for most often is the Centrotec Chuck. The Centrotec Chuck, which can also be bought as a starter set, is not just another quick change accessory. It actually replaces the straight chuck, which means there’s no extra length and no extra wobble. This lets you drill and drive fasteners straight, even right up against a wall!

The Depth Stop Chuck allows for precise depth setting regardless of material. Think of a high-quality drywall screwgun, but with more torque for more applications...but without a cord! An additional plus is the fact that most drywall screwguns require 2 hands, whereas using this chuck with the C12 drill can be done one-handed. Installing a bit is easy: take a standard 1" bit, grab the depth clutch in your left hand and twist the silver bit lock counterclockwise a quarter turn. Setting the depth is just as easy, as you turn the depth clutch on way or the other to raise or lower the set. Like I said, you can drive a screw with one hand, so this comes in extremely handy if you are holding up a sheet of drywall with the other hand. If you need to remove a screw for any reason, you can remove it by holding the green Quick Out ring to the left and reversing your drill. Because of the toque that the C12 delivers, you can also drive 3” deck screws with ease! Also consider how easy installing something like two layers of sub-floor would be with the C12 and Depth Stop Chuck!

Some people will balk at the price of the chucks added to the drill kit, but within a few uses you’ve got your money back in time saved and projects done. The C12 has the advantage of having quick release chucks. You don't have to carry around multiple drills (most with cords), and the C12 comes with a 30-day guarantee and 3-year warranty! If you want the best, the lightest, and the most innovative, you owe it to yourself to give the drill a try.

Festool RO150FEQ 6” Rotex Sander and RO125FEQ 5” Rotex Sander

Woodworkers, Solid Surface Fabricators, and Auto Body Shops can all make their jobs a little easier by investing in a Festool Rotex Sander. The sander has dual-mode capability which makes heavy removal, fine finishing, and even polishing a snap!

Contractors and woodworkers can bring a rough, raw piece of wood to a glorious fine-finish shine within minutes with the RO150FEQ 6” Rotex Sander and the RO125FEQ 5” Rotex Sander. The steps go something like this:

Grab a rough piece of wood.

Remove your Festool Rotex Sander from its systainer and plug it in.

StixFix on a coarse piece of abrasive sandpaper, such as 6” 36-grit Rubin.

Use your thumb to switch the sander into Rotary mode. The toggle switch is located on the top of the sander, and you should push the switch to the right to get into the gear-driven rotary mode.

Turn the sander on, apply the abrasive to the wood, and begin sanding. Because you are in the aggressive rotary sanding mode, you’ll need 2 hands to prevent the pad from jumping.

Once you’ve sanded and see visual results, begin moving up in grits. Next you can grab a 50-grit abrasive sheet and repeat the sanding...from there keep moving up in grits. For bare wood, you want to use Festool’s Rubin abrasive sandpaper up to 180-grit and then switch over to Festool Brilliant abrasive sandpaper, beginning at 220-grit. You can use the Brilliant paper up to 400-grit, then switch over to Platin 2, 500-grit for a fine, fine finish. You can actually go all the way up to 4000-grit Platin for a mirror-smooth finish! Use some water at this point, which will bring out the beautiful natural texture within your wood.

There are many types of abrasives available for Festool sanders. Besides the Rubin for bare wood mentioned above, this includes different types of abrasives for paint, plastics, solid surface, heavy-duty materials, metal and more. Basically, if anyone wants to sand anything, Festool probably has the right abrasive for their application.
